Police have charged controversial Auburn Deputy Mayor Salim Mehajer over alleged threats against the father of Lindt Cafe siege survivor Joel Herat.
Bruce Herat, a 52-year-old personal trainer, claimed Mr Mehajer threatened to “find out where you live and have your kids kidnapped” after he was asked to stop dropping weights at Anytime Fitness gym in Burwood on September 16.
Police confirmed this afternoon Mr Mehajer was charged with intimidation and served a personal violence order. He will face Burwood Local Court on November 19.
Last week Mr Mehajer released a statement denying the claims and saying he would sue Mr Herat and the gym for $10 million in damages.
He said he wanted to “give hope” to other high-profile political figures who had been subjected to harmful allegations.
Mr Mehajer first attracted attention after his August wedding forced the closure of an Auburn street, despite not having prior approval from council.
On Monday, Mr Mehajer told 9NEWS he had his sights set on becoming prime minister in the future.
The announcement coincided with the release of a music video by US rapper Bow Wow, which was shot inside Mr Mehajer’s Auburn mansion.
